Gill Asquith

I’ve lived in the area most of my life. The trees are beautiful - and we’re on the Horsforth Memories website and I noticed one [photo] the other day that had the trees in 19… When was it? It was really early; the trees are no higher than 6 foot - and look at them now!

They’re a pain in the summer when they stop all the sun going into the bedroom, they’re a pain in the summer because they drop all the insects, they drop their – what do they call that sticky stuff? – it all goes over the car. But I love them, absolutely love them – and when they’re covered in snow they’re even better.

I remember when I was a kid, the little metal plaques. Now I think they’ve only got one or two in the museum, they haven’t got a vast amount. They’ve got lost over the years I suppose. But it’s nice now, in the last two years the Council have acknowledged with a little cross on Remembrance Day.

Precis

The trees which line Stanhope Drive, each planted in memory of someone who lost their life in the First World War. There is a list of their names, along with some of the metal plaques originally placed at the base of each tree, in Horsforth Museum.
