#318 Valerie Bursting to Tell

She said I have this massive, massive secret that I need to tell somebody and if you promise not to tell, I’ll tell it you. So I promised.

Valerie

My mother had a secret and she was bursting to tell somebody. She said I have this massive, massive secret that I need to tell somebody and if you promise not to tell, I’ll tell it you. So I promised.

She said, the Queen is coming to visit Mrs Lyon’s. And I said don’t be silly - but she said no its true, its definitely true - she’s coming to Seacroft, to the Seacroft town centre and then she’s going to visit a “commoner’s house” and it’s Mrs Lyon’s! And I’m going to help her wallpaper her living room ready.

So I went down and helped my mum wallpaper Mrs Lyon’s living room, ready for the Queen’s visit. And she did come.

The beauty of being in a company of older performers is the kaleidoscopic range of real-life experiences that they bring to the table. These experiences cover everything from the vivid and strange world of childhood, to the unexpected late awakenings of old age. Take our newest batch of anecdotes, for example. These new stories are delightfully diverse: from the earthly, sensual joy of baking bread, to the cosmic dreams of outer space; from an unnerving encounter with a poltergeist, to the risqué glories of adult pleasure products and burlesque. Running as a rich theme throughout, is the possibility of love, and the simple wonder of human connection. As one writer tells us, in her story of funeral rites and flirting, “Amidst death, life goes on”, and indeed it does, delightfully so.
