#313 Les Manfred Mann Duet

I kept dancing (I had had a few drinks) then they started singing, “The Mighty Quinn”, I put my hand on the microphone and it was turned off so I sang along with them.

It was 1972 or 1971. I was in Perth Australia. In those days everything shut early but there was one night club that was open late for people who worked in other clubs, pubs and for visiting bands.

One night I was there, the visiting band was Manfred Mann. They were on stage having a jam session. I was on the dance floor and someone picked me up and put me on stage. I kept dancing (I had had a few drinks) then they started singing, “The Mighty Quinn”, I put my hand on the microphone and it was turned off so I sang along with them. Then some bastard turned the microphone on and there was I singing, “come on without, come on within” very loud and very flat.

Later the owner on the club came up to me and said “Lesley, I want to offer you a job”. I looked at him very suspiciously and said “doing what?” He replied “Well, when I want to close at the end of the night, you get up and sing and they will all leave!”

So at least I can say I have sung with Manfred Mann - even if it was by accident and very badly.

The beauty of being in a company of older performers is the kaleidoscopic range of real-life experiences that they bring to the table. These experiences cover everything from the vivid and strange world of childhood, to the unexpected late awakenings of old age. Take our newest batch of anecdotes, for example. These new stories are delightfully diverse: from the earthly, sensual joy of baking bread, to the cosmic dreams of outer space; from an unnerving encounter with a poltergeist, to the risqué glories of adult pleasure products and burlesque. Running as a rich theme throughout, is the possibility of love, and the simple wonder of human connection. As one writer tells us, in her story of funeral rites and flirting, “Amidst death, life goes on”, and indeed it does, delightfully so.
