#319 Steve The Dame

I’ve been a genie, I’ve been a cat, I’ve been an emperor - I’ve been everything you can think of, except a dame.

Steve

I am this years’ dame in the production of Treasure Island. The production was meant to go ahead two years ago February, but they had to cancel it because the restrictions were still in place.

This is the first time I’ve ever been a dame. I’ve been a genie, I’ve been a cat, I’ve been an emperor - I’ve been everything you can think of, except a dame.

I’ve thought of basing my dame on Mrs Sloecombe in Are You Being Served and there’s a drag act in Spain where we go and I’ve thought about him, but I think I’ll just be more organic and some inspiration will come to me.

I’ve only tried the costume on once and can’t remember if its’a long frock. I’m hoping it is and it doesn’t show my legs because there’s not much of them - otherwise I’ve got no visible means of support!

I can’t quite get my head around dancing and co-ordinating with singing - singing and dancing is a difficult one for me, so I’ll have to do lots of practice!

The beauty of being in a company of older performers is the kaleidoscopic range of real-life experiences that they bring to the table. These experiences cover everything from the vivid and strange world of childhood, to the unexpected late awakenings of old age. Take our newest batch of anecdotes, for example. These new stories are delightfully diverse: from the earthly, sensual joy of baking bread, to the cosmic dreams of outer space; from an unnerving encounter with a poltergeist, to the risqué glories of adult pleasure products and burlesque. Running as a rich theme throughout, is the possibility of love, and the simple wonder of human connection. As one writer tells us, in her story of funeral rites and flirting, “Amidst death, life goes on”, and indeed it does, delightfully so.
