I've lived in many places because of moving with my husband. And I just think, 'God, I'm so lucky that he was sent to Leeds'
Marie Saunders
My name is Marie Saunders. I've lived in Leeds for forty years. I was living in Bournemouth, which is a lovely seaside town with my husband and two children. And my husband came home one day and said he'd been promoted to a job in Leeds. I said, 'I'm not going to live in Leeds, the women scrub the doorsteps, they're baking all day long. The men wear boots. It's full of factories.'
Anyway I came, didn't I? To be with my husband. And honestly, you might think I'm exaggerating, but every morning when I wake up I thank God that I have lived in Leeds. Because I've lived in many places because of moving with my husband. And I just think, 'God, I'm so lucky that he was sent to Leeds' and I just love it. Even if the streets were full of muck, I'd love it.
The people and the countryside, it's on your doorstep. And I love the country. And of course when I came to Leeds, they had a lovely shopping centre. They had Schofields and Lewis's and I used to love them.
Oh, do I want to share anything about my life? Well I think I've been very, very lucky in life. Although I've lost two lovely husbands, and my husband died in October. Second husband. I'm still coming to terms with that. But I've got a wonderful family and lovely friends, a lovely home, everything to be thankful for.
