Some things never change….. (Marilyn Heron)

When I returned to live in Yorkshire in 1984, after a gap of about 14 years, I had to live temporarily with my parents near Pontefract until the purchase of my house in Ilkley was complete. One day I decided to go shopping in Leeds. I was dropped off by car in Leeds, knowing that I’d be able to catch a bus back to Pontefract.

I managed to find my way around reasonably well from memory. When it was time to leave, I decided to walk to the Headrow, because from there I was pretty certain I could find my way to the bus station. I was, however, thoroughly perplexed! Was I looking in the right direction for the bus station? Surely not, because I could not see Quarry Hill Flats.

Eventually I decided to head down Eastgate anyway and was relieved to reach the police station and see the bus station beyond it. That massive block of flats had simply disappeared, leaving a huge gap in the townscape! I went into the bus station and guess what? The bus to Pontefract was still going from the same stand as it always had done, all those years before!
