My sister was a WAF and would visit us with all these American boyfriends. My mother would say “who’s this now!” and my sister would say “oh this is so and so from America, I really do love him” - but she didn’t marry an American. She married the bloke she went out with when she was 17 who came from the next town. He was away for 6 years in the army. And they married a year after the war.
It was a Catholic wedding. He was a staunch Catholic and she wasn’t, so she had to go to instruction. It was a lovely wedding but there was always this Catholic and C of E conflict - I don’t think it’s as bad now. Though sometimes here there are comments still.
