Then worked in public health as a health visitor in Chapeltown. We rode on a float at the Chapeltown Carnival in August 1980 on a sunny Bank Holiday Monday. An experience I will never forget - in uniform, with the steel bands playing, streets thronged with people, fantastic costumes, vibrant colours, the biggest loud speakers I’ve ever seen. It took three hours to go round. Lovely smells of street food cooking - tried curried goat and jerk chicken - yummy. Learnt so much more about the cultures in Leeds and the wonderful people in Chapeltown - a bit different from a rural farm in Derbyshire.
