#300 Bess Miles Duncan Leads

I did not get to New York but I did get to Grass Valley, California and spent time with the dance company there.

Bess Miles Duncan

I went to school in Leeds, two schools actually. The first where I took my eleven plus and then the grammar school that has suddenly become famous, because of Liz Truss. It was all quite a long time ago. The thing about it in those days was there were two schools, one for girls and one for boys. I was not there long because we moved, but what I do remember was the Grecian dance lessons where we had to wear a rather odd outfit in a pale green. We had to buy the material and then make the outfit.

Years later my dancing was compared to Isadora Duncan’s dancing, so I needed to know about Isadora. Who was she? And of course there was the film which helped a lot, but then I expected her to look like Vanessa Redgrave. I found out about the dance school in New York that taught her work. I did not get to New York but I did get to Grass Valley, California and spent time with the dance company there. I was in the audience on the last night I watched them perform and then my name was read out. I was being given the freedom of the Grass Valley Arts Centre and a certificate to prove it. Nobody had travelled that far before to take part in one of their workshops, what fun.

You see you never quite tell where anything might lead.
