I’ve been in the martial arts world for many many years. I have a lot of stories about martial arts. In this one I was on my way to Kuala Lumpur, on the plane with an Irish rugby player, next to the window, he was a big lad, me, a Yorkshire man in the middle, I’m just short of 6ft and an Dutch yachtsman on the aisle side. We were all big lads. The plane takes off and after a while the lights go out and we all go to sleep. Malaysia is a long way.

The plane is in semi darkness, when the rugby player says I need to go to the toilet. The yachtsman the other side of me was fast asleep. Everybody was fast asleep. So I said look climb over me to the aisle then I don’t have to wake anyone. So he’s trying to climb over me and I’m saying watch where you put your foot! Then he stands on my knee, goes flying over the Yachtsman, who wakes asking What are you doing! Meanwhile the rugby player has crashed over the aisle and on to the people seated on the other side. There is absolute chaos. A flight attendant comes down to see what is happening. The rugby player gets up and says I need to go to the toilet. So he goes, the lights on the plane are put on and the flight attendant comes back with a glass of whiskey for everyone to calm us all down.

The beauty of being in a company of older performers is the kaleidoscopic range of real-life experiences that they bring to the table. These experiences cover everything from the vivid and strange world of childhood, to the unexpected late awakenings of old age. Take our newest batch of anecdotes, for example. These new stories are delightfully diverse: from the earthly, sensual joy of baking bread, to the cosmic dreams of outer space; from an unnerving encounter with a poltergeist, to the risqué glories of adult pleasure products and burlesque. Running as a rich theme throughout, is the possibility of love, and the simple wonder of human connection. As one writer tells us, in her story of funeral rites and flirting, “Amidst death, life goes on”, and indeed it does, delightfully so.
