#748 Brenda A Life of Service and Care

Brenda

So I went to work for Dr Barnado’s. I was a house parent. Anything the child wanted - you would be in charge of a house group. I was a bit embarrassed because I was only 18 when I started and some of the children in there were 18 and going to Tadcaster Grammar. Now it’s difficult trying to tell an 18 year old when you are only 18 what’s right and wrong. Although they were very good, I can’t fault them. Then I was transferred to Ripon and they were a lot younger which was better. I miss it. When I finished at Barnado’s I went to work for Leeds City Council with old people. It was lovely. I miss it even now.

I had to retire before retirement age because my heart wasn’t up to it. I was told I could only do light duties and they don’t want you only doing light duties working with older people.

I do still do work. Someone personally asked me if I could help them shower. I help whenever I can because it gives me pleasure. Helping anybody. I love it. I was the only one and I hated it. No brothers and sisters and I hated it. I love people.
