I did tailoring, hairdressing - I was a sort of jack of all trades. I went to an interview when I left school and I thought the man was a bit funny because he asked me “how do you use your needle?” So I went like that - with it in my hand. And he said “No, how do you hold it”. And he showed me that you’ve got to put your finger down to hold the needle and then you press the eye up against a finger. My first wage was 15 shillings and four pence. And with hairdressing, my eldest son and I trained together. That was in the days when rollers were used.
