#946 Barbara Heydays at the Playhouse

More than 30 years ago when the Playhouse first opened my sister and I came to have a look and have a coffee. On the tables was a leaflet saying “ are you over 55.?” At the time Maureen Rooksby was wanting to start something called Heydays so we got in touch. The following week we went to an open day where we were shown round and told them what kind of things would interest us.

So Heydays began and we became one of about 40 or 50 founder members - I was interested in drama and play reading, my sister was in the art classes. Well what a difference Heydays has been to my life , looking back over the years I have made new friends and old friends, been an “extra” in professional plays, taken part in many performances in both theatres and been to the National Theatre with the singing group.

Also for many years I have led the Play reading group, became a Patron and bought a seat in the Quarry Theatre, in fact Heydays has given me opportunities I would never have thought possible. In December of last year I had my 90th birthday and was presented with a card and a lovely plant by Shawab from all at the Playhouse - to my knowledge I am now the only founder member remaining. So that’s my tale , all these years later I am still a regular member on Wednesday and love it . I have so much to say thank you to the Playhouse for and long may it continue !!!

Heydays, a social group for those over 55, began over 30 years ago at the Playhouse after the author and her sister attended an open day, and the author has since made new friends, taken part in performances, and been an active member, now being the only remaining founder member.
