#944 Penny Vine We’re Elders not Geriatrics

There’s a sense of sort of disappearing- which I don’t always experience in a negative way, personally.  Some of my friends describe having a sense of their existence as literally not being seen, being heard, or witnessed.  A lot of us over the age of 60 still have an awful lot to contribute, but we need that support to be heard and seen.

Being over the age of 60  is much harder now because of the disability. I’ve got so dependent on other people getting me out, which my partner does mostly.

Since school myself I did a project where we got people over the age of 60 people together with children, we brought the age groups together. There is a book written called Intergenerational Circle Time where we got 60 to age 90 together and we bought the age groups together with 10 yr olds.

In terms of language, I don’t like the word geriatric, but I don’t mind being referred to as an older person. I really love the term elders because there’s almost an implication that there is some wisdom.
