So when we were working at Burtons one person would start singing and everybody else would join in, singing the songs of the time. The whole floor would be singing. If you'd seen the size of the floors they were massive. It was packed in its heyday. There was the cutting room, vest and trousers, and the canteen. If you wanted the loo you had to ask and you were timed.
The boss when I was there was called John Garlic and his wife Doreen. There was a lot of managers who were a Mr and Mrs. We used to have bosses at both ends of the room, watching us, checking your work, and if your work wasn’t right they brought it back to you.
Everyone got their work checked. We used to prank each other and have a lot of laughs.
Then things started to change and it went from being tailoring on the site to importing lots of clothes and everything changed.
