When I was a bit younger, during the 1970’s I was a keen member of the Sealed Knot and attended many re-enactments of battles in the English Civil War. We travelled to many castles up and down the British Isles. Luddenden Foot near Halifax, Thornhill Manor, Bramhope, Abingdon, Frome and many more. One year, we were at Warwick Castle having a knockabout, Roundheads V Royalists, re-enacting a battle, storming the castle and firing artillery at each other. I was on the artillery within the castle and we had four canons loaded and we were sitting planning what we could do on Monday that was a bit different. So we had a few drinks to kick off with and then the Roundheads started to attack the Royalists, but there were 20 or 30 of us not really getting involved, as we were too busy drinking. Somehow, one of our canons went off on it’s own, but luckily it hit the rhododendron bushes and the tow rope attached to the canon pulled me down the hill and I also ended up in the rhododendron bushes. I managed to scramble back up to the top and canon 3 went off and again blew me back into the bushes. Looking back, I realise now that this could all be the reason that I am now deaf as a post in my older age. Nevertheless, we had great fun over the years.
