#869 Deolinda Macdonald Building a New Life

Deolinda Macdonald

I came to the UK from Portugal in 1964. It was much better for me here because there is more work. My friends helped me find a job. Some people told me not to come here, but for me it has been really good. When I first came here they interviewed me at the airport because I didn’t have the right permit and then they told me I had to go back to Portugal and wait, but I was here for four months on a holiday visa. I went back to Portugal for the permit and it arrived one week later and I came straight back. My friends really helped me negotiate with the Home Office. At first I lived in Windsor and worked in Eton college and some hotels. When I retired I moved to Leeds to be here with my daughter because she had come here to go to university. I am very proud of my daughter Christina she is very helpful and nice.

I would say in my career I’ve been Jack of all trades and master of none! I’ve done a lot of housework and domestic tasks.
