#848 John and Beryl The Pig in the Loft

John and Beryl

John:l was a butcher. Like my Dad before me. There were five butchers then. Our shop’s a barber’s now. In the war, when there were rationing, they killed this pig. Half went to my mother and she put it in the loft. The other half went to her sister. Well inspectors came round and went to Aunty Mary and didn’t find anything. But when they came to my mother they told her they’ d been to her sister and she’d told them everything. So my mother said “Oh...well it’s in the loft!”

Beryl: I remember when another pig were killed I was taken for a walk in the pram...where they hid the meat to share round!

Precis

The speakers recall their family's involvement in the butcher business in a time of rationing during the war, when they had to hide half a pig in the loft and go for walks in the pram to keep the meat hidden from inspectors.
