Jackie Astbury
My name is Jackie Astbury and I am 74 years old. I was born in a small mining village which at that time wasn’t in the Leeds boundary but is now.
Visiting Leeds was a rare and exciting adventure and travelling with my mother to buy me grammar school uniform at Rawcliffes was a great treat.
As I grew older another visit I remember was with my first boyfriend who asked me on a date.
“Would I like to go to Leeds to see the Beatles or Gerry and the Pacemakers?”
I chose the latter (I know!!!).
When I was of working age I worked in Leeds starting life as an office junior in the legal world at a solicitors office.
Eventually I actually left village life and shared houses with so many friends. Beatlemania was over and for us it was soul music, the mods and rockers arrived. “All-nighters”, mini-skirts, scooters, midi-skirts and so on it went.
Now? A grandma back near the village I was born in and the only all-nighters I have are when the grandkids stay over. I wouldn’t change a thing.
