I got a job in tailoring but they wouldn’t have you where machinery was til you were thirteen and a half. Me mam was a widow then, so she put down that I had to stay at home and look after them til I was thirteen and a half. When I started work I earned more in tips than in wages. I used to go shopping for the workers and get a penny or something for going. I was seventeen before I started on tailoring. I worked in ladies coats and skirts, Armstrong and Marshalls.
