#498 Lucia Fella Three Wishes

Lucia Fella

My name is Christine Nelligan,

When I was 10-year-old, I had a penny whistle which I sat and learned how to play. A few months later, I was given a saxophone and I sat for hours to learn how to play the saxophone. My sister went into the army, and she came home with a mouth organ. My sister didn’t take it back to the army and she left it at home. So, I learned how to play the mouth organ. We had a piano, and I only could play right-handed only. My siblings had piano lessons and when my mum died, my dad couldn’t afford to pay for me as well. In the 1960s, I bought myself a guitar which was £2.10 shillings in a shop in Ireland. I kept seeing it in the shop for four years before I bought it. I call it Derek. Some people came from England brought their guitars and taught me three chords. So, I can sing along as long as it got three chords in it. So, when I came back to England, I entertained in a couple of pubs with three chords. Then I joined a concert party as one of the organisers was Ernie’s cousin Doreen Weisman. I stayed with the concert party for 17 years and it finished in 1997. 2002 I met a young man in the shopping centre in Peterborough, David Jaggs. He inspired me to read music at the age of 67. Stephen bean taught me to read music. He belonged to a group called Angry Man. He taught me for 10 years. He taught me to read music and play classical music. We always sung stand by your man.

I REMEMBER GRANDMOTHER’S HOUSE WITH NEIGHBOURS AND FRIENDS GATHERED BY A LARGE FIREPLACE, AND MY FATHER, A SKILLED STORY-TELLER, RECOUNTING TALES FOR YOUNG AND OLD.

I LOVED LISTENING TO STORIES OF BRAVE WARRIORS, AIDED BY MAGIC, ACHIEVE THE IMPOSSIBLE.

AND WHEN I HEARD A STORY, I TRULY LIKED I LET MY IMAGINATION TAKE ME TO FARAWAY LANDS WHERE MYSTIC CREATURES, HELPED OR HAMPERED THE BRAVE WARRIOR’S QUESTS.

ADULTS LIKED TO LAUGH AT RICH PEOPLE MISADVENTURES AND CHILDREN LIKED FABLES WHERE THE IMPOSSIBLE BECAME POSSIBLE.

THE STORIES WERE PASSED FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT AND QUITE LIKELY EVERY NARRATOR LENGTHENED OR SHORTENED THE STORIES AS THEY WENT ALONG.
