When I was 5 I started school at Whingate Primary. According to my mum I went willingly enough on the first morning, but having gone home for lunch, as was quite usual then, I announced that I had been to school and did not need to go back in the afternoon. Obviously, I was soon put right about that by my mum! My teacher was Miss Haigh who despite standing less than 5 feet tall on her bowed legs ruled the class with a steely determination. She was an emergency trained teacher after the war. She frightened us all to death at first but later she was to become a family friend. I still have the prayer book she gave me for Christmas in 1958.
